Buying Weed Online: A Cautionary Tale

Posted on: 8 January 2018

There are so many things you can buy online now. Buy your groceries online. Buy rare auto parts online. Buy your contact lenses online. Hey, you can even buy weed online. However, you should be aware of some very big problems with buying marijuana online. You should also be aware of selling this drug online. Here are some reasons why, as well as how to protect yourself on both sides of this fence.

Precautions for the Buyer

An online dispensary is an easy way to acquire marijuana. However, it is also an easy way to be tricked or fooled. Consider the fact that marijuana in the United States, for all intents and purposes, is still quite illegal. Shipping marijuana into the U.S. leads to drug-sniffing dogs that find it, and police that confiscate it. To dodge this problem, sellers ship something other than marijuana, such as oregano or thyme. Buyers are defrauded of their money, and these not-so-honest sellers remain free of a criminal record.

That is not to say that all online dispensaries are frauds. In fact, most of them are legitimate marijuana dispensaries. It is up to the sellers to tell buyers that the sellers cannot ship something illegal into a country where the federal government still considers it illegal, even if the marijuana is going to a state that has legalized its use. It is very difficult to ship it over international lines without getting caught and creating problems for both the buyer and the seller. As the buyer, you do not want to answer to federal law if your shipment of marijuana from another country passes into your possession. Stick to online dispensaries within your own state, as long as it is legal in your state and you can buy anywhere within the state lines.

Precautions for Sellers

Canadians, Mexicans or any other nationality should be aware that they cannot sell marijuana online and ship it into the United States. Regardless of the amounts and/or the destination, the FDA and other government policing agencies will intercept your packages and confiscate them. Your buyers will be very irate, and left without their orders and their money. As an honest seller, you would be forced to refund their money and take the loss as a business write-off.

Worse still, your online dispensary for marijuana would be flagged by the American government. Any more packages sent from your business address would not make it through customs or air mail shipments. Understanding that a state that has legalized the use of marijuana is not enough reason to continue shipments to those states either, as it remains a technicality of the American government that all marijuana products are illegal. It is just best to keep your shipments within your own country/province where it is fully legal. Tell any customers in the United States that you cannot ship marijuana to them, even if they do have a medical card that allows them to buy such products in their home state.

Lost Weed in the Mail

Ordering, shipping, and receiving marijuana by mail is a dangerous game. It is a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. The U.S. Postal Service does a very good job of delivering all of its packages, but there is still enough room for error that your weed package could get lost, or worse, end up on a neighbor's doorstep. Then your neighbors would either smoke it, or report you to the police, neither of which you would want. Because you are ordering, shipping and receiving weed by mail, you would also have no recourse to report the missing package and its contents. If you are going to do so, do so within the confines of a state that has legalized weed, and do not use a federal shipping agency to ship your order.
